Goofs After the boat has tipped over, Matt has a cut that is bleeding on the right hand of his forehead. The film was very suspenseful but there are literally no surprises here at all.
It is just a matter of does the shark manage to eat all of the meat before at least one of the boaters makes it to shore? The answer: almost.
The downside of this film is that almost all shots of the shark appear to be stock footage. Maybe I can't suggest a better way to do it, but there is a reason that Jaws used a mechanical shark.
A flash of tail, churning of water, and the sudden onset of blood just doesn't cut it. Jaws actually showed us the horror in the water better than any movie out there.
Still, The Reef is a well-made and watchable movie that adds no frills to the events as they unfold, which i have noticed is a style quite common in Aussie films.
No judgment, no cliche mood building music to tell us how to feel. It makes for a very watchable but forgettable film.
This movie was handled very well. Tightly shot, and actors put into an impossible situation, and major terror. The last 10 minutes of the movie is almost white knuckle suspense.
A small group are transferring a sailing boat from Australia to Indonesia, and they hit something, that overturns their boat and leaves it in sure danger of sinking.
Since they area is away from heavily traveled ship lanes, they are faced with staying and hoping to be rescued before the boat sinks, or trying to swim the miles to an island.
And those waters have sharks in it. The camera has really three vantage points. One is the vastness of ocean, two is the smallness of them, and the third is from underwater showing how they would appear to a shark.
The danger was slowly ramped up. No, no stupid shark jumping out of the water, or any of that silliness. Just sharks being sharks, and mainly hinted at, not seen, and not seen close up.
And that makes it a more effective movie. One cannot predict who will make it or not make it. The actors were given a script that allowed them to act as one would expect them in such a situation.
Just a grim determination to survive. Let's see. Sailing at low tide through the great barrier reef and not a single navigation aid or chart to be found.
How many times will they stop and endlessly stare at the water. Run away? Not so much suspense as just white knuckled yelling at the screen to get a grip and move on.
This is one of my favorite shark movies. The best part is they use real sharks. No fake robot or computer animated sharks here. Just real Great Whites!
It's terrifying to think about being stranded in the open ocean. Jaws is the greatest shark film of all time. However this is by far the scariest shark film I've ever seen and I've seen nearly all of them!

Really enjoyed it, It has no bloody scenes and I appreciate the thrilling moments of suspense where you can help yourself to grab the hand of whoever is with you, waiting for the Shark to attack..
