Now nearly 40 years after the last episode premiered comes another big screen version a spin off film with the original cast came out in The Home Guard were to be the last line of defense in an invasion of the UK.

The plot of the new film is paper thin. It's and the Nazi's are desperate to understand the invasion plans of the Allied forces. They dispatch a spy - Agent Cobra - to the sleepy seaside town of Walmington- on-Sea to try to dig out the truth.

At the same time, an attractive journalist in the shapely form of Catherine Zeta-Jones arrives in the town to do an article on the Home Guard unit, stirring up passions and relationship-disruptions as she goes.

And that about sums it up! Now, you'd have to be pretty clinically stupid after watching the trailer not to work out who the spy was going to be, and fortunately for the film this is not a secret that is left to outstay its welcome.

As a standalone film it's a pleasant enough watch, but in the end a bit of a damp squib. It really only works as a strong dose of nostalgia for the characters from the original series.

So the key demographic for this would be those over 50 or children under 12 who may also enjoy some of the farcical and knockabout humor.

Many of the cast are perfectly suited to their roles, as caricatures of the original cast. Toby Jones in particular excels in getting across the character of the puffed up and self-important Mainwaring.

The quality of his acting is nicely brought home by a blooper shown over the end credits involving a mobile phone: Jones stays perfectly in character as he lambasts Private Godfrey.

It was also truly fantastic to see year old Frank Williams reprise his role as the vicar. With Ian Lavender's cameo, one of only two of the original cast members to do so.

The one cast member that really didn't work for me was Tom Courtenay as Corporal Jones: an excellent actor, but not a good fit for this part.

Jones in the guise of Clive Dunn was at the farcical comedy centre of the original series, but here all of his lines fall as flat as a deflated blimp.

The script manages to fabricate opportunities for most of the cast to utter their classic catchphrases, with some more successful than others.

Despite his age, he is one of the more competent members of the platoon. Joe Walker was played by James Beck in the television series and seven episodes of the radio series, and by Graham Stark for five radio episodes, with Larry Martyn for the remainder of the radio series.

A black market " spiv " he called himself a "wholesale supplier" , Walker was the only fit, able-bodied man of military age in Walmington-on-Sea's home guard.

His absence from the regular armed forces was due to a corned beef allergy, although it was implied that Walker had probably found a way to play the system.

Mainwaring often turned a blind eye to his profiteering as he could supply the platoon and Mainwaring with useful items. On more than one occasion, Walker's willingness to use underhand tactics allowed Mainwaring's platoon to triumph over rivals in the Home Guard, Army and ARP.

He irritated Mainwaring with his penchant for making wisecracks at inappropriate times. Following Beck's death in , Walker was written out of the series.

The platoon found a note from Walker, explaining that he had gone to " The Smoke " to conduct some business, and he was not heard from again. Played by Arnold Ridley , Charles Godfrey was the frailest member of the platoon and was the platoon's medical orderly.

Godfrey was a gentle, amiable but vague bachelor who lived with his spinster sisters Dolly and Cissy in an idyllic cottage, and was a martyr to his weak bladder, leading to many requests to be "excused".

He was very loyal to Captain Mainwaring, except on one occasion when he took part in a plot to make Mainwaring's feet hurt. The youngest platoon member born — played by Ian Lavender — Frank Pike, a cosseted mother's boy and often the target of Mainwaring's derision "You stupid boy!

He called Wilson "Uncle Arthur" and, although never explicitly stated, it was often evident that Wilson and Pike's mother were in a relationship, which they unsuccessfully tried to hide, and Walmington is rife with gossip about the couple.

Wilson is often seen having meals at Mrs Pike's house with Frank, and Pike mentions several times that Wilson spends the night although he believes he sleeps on the sofa, whilst Wilson accidentally lets slip that he was in fact in bed with Mrs Pike.

It was also occasionally suggested that Wilson was Pike's father although the writers only acknowledged this in interviews after the programme ended.

In an early episode, when asked by Captain Mainwaring why Frank calls him "Uncle Arthur" when he is not a blood relation, Wilson states that it was Mrs Pike who had insisted from an early age Frank call him "Uncle Arthur" and that this dates from a point in Frank's childhood when Frank had started to "accidentally" call Arthur Wilson "something else He frequently threatens to set his mother on Mainwaring whenever he is shouted at or forced to do anything he doesn't want to do.

He has the lowest position at the Swallows Bank branch, subordinate to both Wilson and Mainwaring.

After addressing initial concerns that the programme was making fun of the efforts of the Home Guard, the series was commissioned. It was he who renamed the show Dad's Army.

Thus, the Home Guard were on the front line in the eventuality of an invasion by the enemy forces across the English Channel, which formed a backdrop to the series.

The first episode, " The Man and the Hour ", began with a scene set in the 'present day' of , in which Mainwaring addressed his old platoon as part of the contemporary 'I'm Backing Britain' campaign.

The prologue opening was a condition imposed after initial concerns by Paul Fox, the controller of BBC 1, that it was belittling the efforts of the Home Guard.

Later episodes were largely self-contained, albeit referring to previous events and with additional character development.

However, the group did have some encounters related to the war such as downed German planes, a U-boat crew, parachutes that may have been German, and German mines.

The humour ranged from the subtle especially in the class-reversed relationship between Mainwaring and Wilson, who also happened to be his deputy at the bank to the slapstick the antics of the elderly Jones being a prime example.

Jones had several catchphrases, including "Don't panic! Mainwaring said "You stupid boy" to Pike in many episodes.

The first series occasionally included darker humour, reflecting the fact that, especially early in the war, members of the Home Guard were woefully under-equipped and yet were still prepared to have a crack at the German Army.

Mainwaring, Godfrey, Frazer and Jones along with Godfrey's sisters, who are completely unaware of the invasion decide to stay at the cottage to delay any German advance, giving the rest of the platoon time to warn the town; "Of course, that will be the end of us", says Mainwaring.

The show's opening titles were originally intended to feature footage of refugees and Nazi troops, in order to illustrate the threat faced by the Home Guard.

The replacement titles featured the familiar animated sequence of swastika-headed arrows approaching Britain.

In Series 6 they were updated — in all previous versions one of the Nazi arrows passes over the tail of another but then appears under.

This was corrected. The closing credits of the show are a homage to the end credits of the film The Way Ahead which had covered the training of an everyman platoon during the war and was released as a propaganda film in In both instances, each character is shown as they walk across a smoke-filled battlefield.

One of the stars of Dad's Army , John Laurie, also appeared in that film, and his performance in the end credits of The Way Ahead appears to be copied in the sitcom.

The show's theme tune, " Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Hitler? Perry wrote the lyric himself, and composed the music with Derek Taverner. Perry persuaded one of his childhood idols, wartime entertainer Bud Flanagan, to sing the theme for guineas.

Flanagan died shortly after the recording. Arthur Lowe also recorded a full version of the theme. The closing credits feature an instrumental march version of the song played by the Band of the Coldstream Guards conducted by Captain later Lt Col Trevor L.

Sharpe, ending with the air-raid warning siren sounding all-clear. It is accompanied by a style of credits that became a trademark of David Croft: the caption "You have been watching", followed by vignettes of the main cast.

Dad's Army is less affected than most, but three second-series episodes are lost, and one third-series episode was filmed in colour but had only existed in black and white.

This third-series episode has been re-coloured, using an existing colour signal in the black-and-white tele-recording, and was transmitted on 13 December on BBC Two.

Two further series-two episodes were believed lost until Two of the three lost episodes have since been performed as part of the latest stage show.

In , soundtracks of the lost episode A Stripe for Frazer and the Christmas Night with the Stars special Present Arms were recovered, but it is unlikely that a visual version of either will be found.
