Less than satisfying? Well, the whole movie is like this. They do try to liven things up, throw in a little romance It is a woman, whose husband spent all their money and mortgaged their home before he "strangely" dies falling off a cliff.
She knows nothing about it, or that their year home was mortgaged to the hilt and nothing paid on it so that a month after he dies, everything is in danger of being repossessed.
The house alone at , pounds due immediately. Even the riding lawn mower is repossessed. You don't see much of her angst.
She just hangs up on creditors, and throws the mail in the trash and goes around the village like normal Her gardener, a man that seems to never have held a steady job, has no money, no property; but who is shacking up with a pretty woman who works as a fisherman; is trying to grow pot under other people's bushes.
The plants aren't doing well, and because this woman, Grace, grows orchids he decides she is a wiz with plants and asks her for help. So they go out in the dead of night, and crawl under bushes and she brings one back, saying she knows they are pot.
She gets it growing, and then asks how much does it sell for, and her gardener says a whole lot. So they are going to GROW, harvest, and sell marijuana and then pay.
I haven't known creditors to wait. They harvest it, somewhere in it an ex-fling of her husband keeps showing her face and Grace decides to make friends and THEN gets angry and throws her out when she finds out that her husband had sex and enjoyed it with her.
Why DO men have mistresses? So Grace decides to go into the slums and sell the pot herself. She can't so now she decides for sure the ex-girlfriend will know a dealer and goes there expecting help.
Right after she kicked her out of her house. IF the husband spent any money on this woman, and it would make sense he did; it was never even hinted at in this movie.
If this movie was building blocks, they would keep falling over because they were not supported! A dealer comes to the adulterer's house, he is not big enough, so they get him to take them to a dealer big enough This movie can't really decide what it wants to be a comedy or something else.
The deal is made. I can't really tell how much money it is, or if it will cover Grace's money needs Then when they go home, the girlfriend who has been saying all along she doesn't want her boyfriend, and soon to be father of her child, to be doing something illegal because she is afraid he will go to jail Grace already knew this while she was getting him to help her do this.
But NOW, they decide they are scared?! So, in a moment, they decide to burn it all up. Which they do.
The smoke of which intoxicates her neighbors and the police one of which runs around naked. The drug dealer shows up. Thinks Grace is Oh so cute.
They go off and get married! She writes a book and makes a lot of money. And we have no idea what happens to anyone else, except they are all happy in the village watching her on TV say she has written a book.
This is like a high school kid's attempt at writing a funny story, acted by good thespians, and a number of seemingly village cast. You know the type.
Timing off. Jokes off. Story disjointed, unbelievable, and doesn't quite make sense. I didn't turn off the TV so I gave it a 3. But I should have.
Bought this after searching and not finding it on any streaming channel I have access to for free I have seen it on cable before but not recently.
I enjoy it Love Blethyn and this role allows her to be more feminine than her Vera one Her ability to cross the gamut from comedy to drama happens a few times I wish she did more Craig Ferguson is good and there are other familar faces as well from British comedy And ironic as well to see how time has proven her talents as a gardener could be in high demand in state like Colorado now See all reviews.
Top reviews from other countries. Oh, what fun this little film is! The story of a highly respectable middle aged widow growing cannabis in her greenhouse to avoid losing her beautiful house is delightfully off-beat.
Hopefully even the greatest opponents of drug use will get it that drug production and marketing are played purely for comic effect.
Grace has a green thumb and a suitable space for the growing of the illegal but highly profitable crop, her pot smoking gardener has a few struggling plants and connections to market the crop.
It seems highly unlikely that the townspeople aren't aware of Grace's activities, and there is much fun to be had watching them and willing them not to notice what is going on in their town.
Or at least to keep pretending they don't notice And when Grace goes to the big city to market her product things take an even more hilarious turn! The entire cast is excellent with Brenda Blethyn at her most likable as the unlikely drug queen, Craig Ferguson is convincing and equally likable as her laid back partner in crime, and Martin Clunes' appearance as the local doctor which apparently inspired the highly successful series Doc Martin is one of the highlights of the film.
The filming locations in beautiful Cornwall add to the overall charm. This is a highly enjoyable comedy, a bit of light hearted escapism aimed at an audience that isn't keen on exciting action scenes and violence.
Perfect for a quiet evening in. A few words about the DVD: There are no subtitles. I think this is my all time favourite comedy. It's one of only a few that I have watched several times.
There are several scenes that make me laugh out loud every time. I even replaced my old vhs copy with a dvd.
Why this isn't available on Amazon prime I will never know. It deserves to be seen by more people. I have shown it to several friends who loved it as much as I do.
It is a very British comedy with a mixture of pathos, silliness and really poignant comic moments. It is heartwarming and uplifting.
Just the remedy for feeling a bit jaded or a rainy day. There are great performances by a range of well known British actors.
It's also set in some great scenery. I'm not going to say anything about the plot because if you haven't seen it you deserve to be surprised and moved by the emerging story.
I bought this film as I enjoyed it the first time, and basically I want to make all my family fall in love with it.
I hadn't seen this film when it first came out, but I bought as the TV series Doc Martin traces its origins to this film, and with the wonderful Brenda Blethyn, it's hard to go too far wrong.
The thread connecting it to the show is pretty thin though, with the same setting, but an entirely different cast of villagers and even the doctor, as played by Martin Clunes, is completely different in character and temperament to the curmudgeonly GP we come to know in the series.
The story - a penniless widow turns to cannabis growing to pay the bills - is entertaining enough, but perhaps not explored in as much depth as it could be.
It's OK, but feels more like a fairly average episode of Doc Martin than a classic film. Report abuse. Soon as you see the cover you know this is not a org copy The slip on the box of the dvd is a print out and is in low Quality When you open the box an see the cover on the DVD you can see this is also been printed out on a very low quality printer however the disk is silver and does play but it is not an original it is a fake.

Humor arises from the idea of a middle-aged, upper-class woman trying to deal with the London drug culture and, later, from the inevitable giggly effects of the weed, mostly consumed unintentionally by a variety of characters.
The main reason for bothering with this film is the outstanding performance of Brenda Blethyn as Grace though Craig Ferguson as Matthew is also good.
She becomes both funny and endearing. The climactic scene bears a strong resemblance to the finale of Pirates of Penzance. I agree with one of the other reviewers that the ending is distinctly implausible, but by then I was too fond of the characters and laughing too hard to care.
Funny, superb acting. Love Brenda Blethyn! The script is a little implausible but not totally. I am what many both negatively and positively call an Anglophile.
This would not work as an American film. All that being said, this is just fun, funny and easy to watch.
I would also recommend viewing other Brenda Blethyn work as she is so versatile. And of course there is "Vera" which is simply awesome.

It was about a woman, whose husband dies. It's not clear how he dies. There are cryptic remarks about the strange way he died. The actors are first class.
They are excellent in what they do. They, along with the scenery which looks like the place where the serial "Doc Martin" was filmed- even Martin Clunes is in it as a doctor that says he is not very good with sick people.

Trivia When Dr. Bamford Martin Clunes and two townsmen witness the extreme phosphorescent lighting at Grace's Brenda Blethyn hothouse, the two townsmen want to call the local police and the RAF, for fear about Grace's well-being.
Bamford discourages them, and advises then that Grace is helping apply her special growing techniques to certain medicinal plants.
The townsmen ask Dr. Bamford whether he ever tried the plants, and he allows that he did, once, while in college, but he didn't inhale.
That is an obvious allusion to former President Clinton, who famously indicated he tried marijuana during his Rhodes Scholar years in England, but didn't inhale.
