There's a lot of hype surrounding Attack on Titan, though a lot of that is for the anime version. I've never seen it, and after reading the first volume of the manga, I don't know if I'll bother.
Attack on Titan is based on a solid premise: a century ago, man-eating giants, called titans, suddenly appeared and attacked humanity en masse.
Now, the remaining survivors live inside high, thick walls, and have generally given up on defeating the titans. So far, so good.
And what the manga does best i There's a lot of hype surrounding Attack on Titan, though a lot of that is for the anime version.
And what the manga does best is to give you a very real sense of the panic and desperate fear that goes with a titan attack on the city.
When the titans were actually attacking, it was a riveting read. But the book doesn't spend all its time detailing attacks.
That's probably a good thing, in general, because I just would have gotten tension fatigue. But this is where the problems come in.
The characters aren't particularly compelling or likeable, and the dialog isn't convincing. It's possible that the latter could be due to the translation, but Kodansha translations are usually pretty good.
And I hate the art. It looks amateurish to me. There are a few panels that are effective, and the titans' designs are chilling, but in general it just looks clumsy.
It seems like the anime has a different, and much better, art style. So I don't like the writing, and I don't like the art.
The premise is good, but is that enough to keep me reading? View all 10 comments. Sep 04, Hassan rated it it was amazing Shelves: fantasy , high-fantasy , manga , on-my-shelf , favsssss.

This is a review of the entire series. Attack on Titan takes place in a horrifying dystopian fantasy world that somewhat mirrors our own, like an apocalyptic Europe where the last remnants of humanity live behind massive, skyscraper-sized walls to protect themselves from the giant, man-eating monsters known as Titans lurking just beyond them.
The walls have successfully protected humanity for a hundred years, yet that short era of false peace comes to an end when a colossal titan bigger and deadl This is a review of the entire series.
The walls have successfully protected humanity for a hundred years, yet that short era of false peace comes to an end when a colossal titan bigger and deadlier than any other of its kind brings judgement to the last survivors of the world.
The story follows an ambitious and hotheaded young boy named Eren Yeager, who vows to take revenge on the titans after they break down the walls of his city, killing his mother and thousands of innocent people right before his very eyes.
The story begins with Eren having a disturbing nightmare. Incredible foreshadowing is a reoccurring thing in Attack on Titan. The most minor and seemingly insignificant characters and events always end up having major significance much later down the road.
The further you get into the series, the more you begin to realize that the author had every single plot point, revelation and twist planned out before he ever even published the first chapter.
After Eren wakes up from his nightmare, we are introduced to Armin and Mikasa. After their relatively peaceful lives are torn apart by a titan invasion, Eren, Armin and Mikasa enlist themselves in the survey corp, an organization of soldiers and tacticians that are trained in the art of killing titans and defending civilians from their wrath using a pair of swords and a device known as 3D Maneuver Gear.
The 3D Maneuver Gear was created to be able to navigate through a three dimensional space. With it, a person can travel from point to point at extremely fast speeds by firing steel wires with hooks attached on the ends so they can latch onto structures and titans.
This is a very unique way of portraying tiny humans being able to stand a chance against giant titans in combat. The weakness of all titans is the nape of the neck, and the only way to reach the nape is to perform all kinds of twists and turns in midair with the maneuver gear until you can give yourself an opening.
After being put through years of brutal military training, Eren and his friends are prepared to lay their lives on the line to exterminate every last titan in the world and bring freedom to humanity once more.
The biggest strengths of Attack on Titan are the numerous plot twists and the layers of mystery that are evident from the very beginning.
Some of the twists are so massive, that they literally change the genre of the entire series because of the new perspectives they bring. It can go from survival horror, to psychological mystery, to political thriller at the drop of a hat and none of it is ever done just for shock value.
Because of the amount of planning ahead at play here, Attack on Titan has a truly impressive level of re-readability. The constantly shifting genres and conflicts is what keeps it fresh and exciting.
Even when the world is destroyed and overrun with monsters, humans will still clash and tear each other to pieces.
And I absolutely loved the ridiculous levels of tension this conflict caused. Just like everything else in this series, the misleading nature of the early chapters is totally intentional.
I went into this series expecting a straightforward, action-packed monster movie type of story like Jurassic Park or Godzilla, and it does start out that way to be perfectly fair.

I'm not sure if the people who did the show added all that in to give the characters more backstory, or if they pulled that stuff in from flashbacks in later volumes of the manga.
As someone who watched the show first, I might be filling in blanks and details in my head that someone who hasn't watched won't have. In a way it's almost like a re-read for me, even though I haven't done the manga before.
This volume ends in a terrible spot, and I'd be dying for the next book if I didn't already know what happens next.
Despite no real surprises I enjoyed the manga almost as much as I did the anime and plan to continue reading it as I can get copies from my library.
Artwork I haven't read much manga, and what I did was back in college. It's hard for me to give a real good opinion on the art as someone who is better read in the stuff.
I thought it was pretty good until the action sequences. Those just appear to be a blur of lines that make it difficult to know what's going on.
Coming from the anime which I think has absolutely fantastic animation, seeing the action in this way was hard to follow and not very impressive.
You don't get a feel for how cool the 3d maneuvering gear really is from. The titans themselves look good when captured in a pose, but again not so much when he's trying portray them in rapid motion.

I hate waiting. Final review 4. Finally finished. Personally, I prefer anime with this one, as anime has gorgeous art.
So, let's discuss the positive and negative aspects of "Attack on Titan" manga: Positives: 1. The story and world-building is vast, heroic and exciting!
Not to mention, suspenseful. I had too little patience to wait for revelations about titans' origins and "what is on that goddamn basement".
Enjoyment: It was action-packet and exciting. Apart from some boring parts, overall, I enjoyed it very much. Underlying themes: Human flaws, behaviors at the very stressful situations, what is it to be a hero, saving humanity, friendship and love.
Surprise plot-twists! They were all useful at some point in the story, some played major part despite being side characters Reiner, Berthold, Grisha and Krista , some were so complex and with flaws Erwin, Grisha, Ymir and even antagonists were a bit likeable.
Negatives: 1. Some characters: Actually, I didn't hate Eren like most of people do, even though he is a bit annoying with his anger issues and reckless behaviors.
I, on the other hand, found Mikasa a bit boring, despite being badass soldier, she seemed to have lack of personality.
Not to mention her obsessive love and protectiveness for Eren, however, Eren seems to be blind to that love.
I think, Eren is incapable to form a romantic relationship with anybody, including his childhood friend. Which is, well, a disappointment for romance fans.
I also didn't love Levi as much as many people do. He was like Mikasa-badass but boring personality-wise.
Art it was mediocre most of the time, but action and battle scenes were hard to distinct. That's why, I loved anime more.
Overall, it was a thrilling series to read and there is still more to be published, so the story hasn't ended yet. The final volume was emotional as Armin's childhood dream came true!
I am so happy for that, but for a particular reason, also a bit sad. I'll put this manga down for a few months till new volumes come out.
In the end, I recommend it to action shounen manga fans. But beware, it is brutal Nov 07, Shaina rated it really liked it Shelves: , kindle , thriller-suspense , ebook , manga-comics , sci-fi-dystopian , borrowed , my-ownbook-list , eerie-spooky-gothic-weird-creepy , review-of-the-year.

Disturbing, but also a fascinating turn for shounen manga- the anime, if successful, might hopefully- given other recent successes like the new Hunter x Hunter encourage studios to return to more serious manga-based work rather than continue to indulge in the largely light novel based 'moe' craze.
In Shingeki no Kyojin it's as though the author combined the lately very popular zombie genre with giants from Norse mythology despite the rendering 'Titans'.
There's a vividness to the rather Middle Ages Germanic-looking villages reminiscent of Berserk, and the tone so far at least is dark and oppressive enough to belong firmly in the seinen category.
With people getting picked up and eaten by these giants very graphically, being crushed, broken and losing limbs whilst trying to buy time for others to evacuate, a hell-like vista opens up whenever the giants appear, often overwhelming these very soldiers as though the scenario were unreal very Gantz-like this.
The variety of size and the silence of these giants, combined with how little humanity knows about them save that they appear to hunt humans for pleasure and how complacent humanity has grown behind their walls make for hopeless situations where even when an objective is achieved it's at too great a cost sometimes for logistical reasons the cost is borne by the administration, deliberately consigning to death those it can no longer support after losing territory.
You also can't help but think there's some sort of Freudian metaphor being worked at here when it comes to the Titans. We shall have to see in later volumes, though a 'folktale' referred to in the story of an outside threat being used to unite humanity as familiar from science fiction does suggest other, in-narrative possibilities.

I couldn't get enough of it. So, I'm not really a fan of writing long reviews so I'll keep this short: It's nice to see Armin's character to develop from a cowardly lad to a courageous intellectual soldier.
He might be one of my favorite characters, but Rivaille will always be the first in my list : The art is still the same, but I've learned to accept it and love it as it is.

I think action manga is better executed in anime. I prefer anime in this one. I am not necessarily fan of this type of art, but the art generally is okay.
The intense confrontation at the beginning was my favorite part. Good job, Armin! This one finishes with a cliffhanger but it wasn't as good as the others.
I also don't have the next volume with me and I can't really remember what happened next so yeah that's fun. Can't wait to read the fourth volume.

Pretty interesting to see how hard it is for humanity to reconcile with their limited options for survival. Sometimes you just have to leave behind rationality in order to embrace those crazy alternatives.

It seems though that in the case of Shingeki no Kyojin it's the other way around. The plot is not explored in such in-depth manner as in the anime and the graphic presentation is really terrible.

Reading this manga is an immersive experience - it's actually quite astounding to me how long Isayama can maintain a dark mood without it feeling tired, forced, or exaggerated.
Maybe if I were reading the series all at once, it would get overwhleming, but reading it slowly, the mood is distinctive. Even when I have a little trouble remembering what happened in the previous volume, the mood brings me back to it.
This is backed up by a very well-written story. Isayama writes mysteries that are genuinely mysterious, without feeling cheap.
Each new development, each new clue towards the eventual answer, is riveting. And even though the novel takes place over a very short period of time it's hard to say for sure, but probably only a few hours , Isayama manages to work in character development into nearly every scene.
There are no scenes that only advance the plot, or only advance character development - the two are seamlessly melded. It's some of the most well-planned, expertly-written writing I've ever seen in manga.
The only stick in the mud is the artwork, which is starting to improve, but still doesn't quite do the story justice.
Otherwise, I have trouble finding any reason not to call this series perfect.

Then it started to come on anime night on my beloved cartoon channel. Something about this gets to you in a raw way, like Jack and the Bean Stalk but on Steroids without the golden goose ending.
If the giant, a bunch of them; It is very hard to write about a manga like this one. If the giant, a bunch of them; came down in an endless stream looking for humans; to eat.
Unending appetites, some with smiles or really no expression at all. No preference—just humans. Any human. Whole or not. The objective so far; to wipe out the human race.
Humanity trying to keep itself from extinction from these giants of humanoid shapes and varying sizes with one known weak spot; not much else knowledge to go on.
