This movie is like a study in why telegraphing is not good. I understand that some telegraphing is pretty much unavoidable.
Example: Mayor Wando Linda Hamilton has kids. I don't need to watch the movie to know they'll be at the heart of, possibly even the cause of, a crisis.
This is part of the game, and doesn't reflect poorly on the movie. However, this movie takes telegraphing to another level entirely. We're introduced to Mayor Wando's Mother-in-law, who has a mountain lodge and she insists that the mountain would 'never hurt' her.
I can already tell that she's going to refuse to leave her home, thus placing others at risk in an attempt to rescue her.
We see early on that there's a developer with deep pockets who may want to invest in the town near the mountain. As soon as I hear that, I know that in order to woo the developer, any danger from the mountain will be drastically downplayed, thus placing others at risk.
It's made obvious that Dr. Harry Dalton's Pierce Brosnan colleagues believe that he tends to be overly cautious.
I don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that they'll ignore his warnings until it's too late, thus placing others at risk. The icing on the cake was when we're told that a piece of equipment randomly has a distress beacon built into it, and that nugget of information is apropos of absolutely nothing whatsoever at the time we hear of it.
Gee, y'think that'll be coming in handy later in the movie? It's superior to both its contemporary, 'Volcano,' and the far, Far more recent 'Pompeii.
Disaster fans should really give this a try and not assume that just because it's an older film it won't look any good when compared to more recent disaster fare.
